The Job Mentality Versus The Owner Mentality

This may seem familiar but i don't want this to be confused with having a job versus being an entrepreneur. The irony is you can have a job and possess the Owner mentality. Also you can be an entrepreneur and possess the Job Mentality.

The Job Mentality: It is the mentality that makes you believe that you are working primarily to make profit or to receive your paycheck. With the job mentality, you don't strive to improve yourself, your performance. You believe you can keep doing the same thing over and over again while making more and more money.

The Owner Mentality: It is the mentality that allows you to cede some control of your business activities daily to other people while concentrating on ways to improve yourself and your business's performance. Possessing the owner mentality, you strive to create and improve the value you offer to your customers.

Most of the self-acclaimed entrepreneurs in the business world today can be classified as managerial capitalists. A managerial capitalist is someone who controls all the daily activities of his business. Satisfactorily, they are on their own, they call the shots and are in control of their destiny but they run the business, they don't own it. Their primary focus is absorbed in running the business not improving the business. It would be very difficult to run a business and improve it at the same time. This is the reason why the biggest run businesses in the world have a superb team.

Focusing on the Owner Mentality

I am of the opinion that every human should have only one job i.e The job God has given you; Everyone on this planet has a gift and the earlier you realize this gift and make it your job, the better for you. You should search for a deeper meaning to your life, how you can impact the world. This world apart from the firmaments and nature was designed by humans no smarter than you. The fact that you go to school or work is as a result of one person's thinking. The universally known education system was created by the Byzantine Empire circa 425 A.D, the 40 hour work week (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) was created by Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company. So you shouldn't conform to the thinking and demands of another individual if it doesn't suit you. No Human is smarter than the other, the only person smarter than any human is God and that is why we all have to sleep, eat, grow. It was so created by Him and therefore the reason why refusing to sleep, eat, grow is impossible for human existence. Remember the Owner Mentality is the mentality that allows you to cede some control of your business activities daily to other people while concentrating on ways to improve yourself and your business's performance. Possessing the owner mentality, you strive to create and improve the value you offer to your customers.

It might be crazy to believe that everyone should ditch the Job Mentality and adopt the Owner Mentality because if everyone adopts the Owner Mentality, you might ask who is going to run the business. This now leads to another point which requires you to change paradigms.

The Owner Mentality doesn't necessarily mean you own your business, it means you own your Job. Your Job can be in another man's business. Everyone cannot own his own business which is the reason a capitalist society cannot stand on its own. If there are capitalists, there have to be socialists. Don't let the entrepreneurial society deceive you into believing that you should never work to fulfill another man's dream. In-fact you cannot fulfill your dream without helping others fulfill theirs; you can only become rich by enriching others. The Owner Mentality means when working for another man's business, you strive to improve yourself and the value you offer. You also understand that while striving to improve yourself, you should improve the business performance because it is a joint effort that ensures the greatest success.

Back to the Job Mentality, remember

It is the mentality that makes you believe that you are working primarily to make profit or to receive your paycheck. With the Job mentality, you don't strive to improve yourself or your performance. You believe you can keep doing the same thing over and over again while making more and more money.

The Job mentality is what makes you believe you shouldn't work to fulfill another man's dream. It is what makes you not care about improving customer relationships because its not your business. You only show up in your work place because you are going to receive a paycheck. You don't care about your work performance and how it affects the organization you work for.

When you own a business and you possess the Job mentality, you exploit less fortunate individuals who have failed to turn their gifts to their job. These individuals constitute your workforce and their efforts are always channeled to fulfill your selfish motives. This mentality is what makes you spend your time doing nothing to improve your business while dedicating complete control of the business to someone else. This model only creates temporary or no success at all.

If you can grasp this, you will be on your way to making the infamous switch from the Job mentality to the Owner mentality. You can do the proof yourself, check out the most successful business owners and employees and identify the mentality they work with.
